The ValidFan Read

Take the road-win formula to Richmond.

Colgate has already shown it can win a demanding road game: the Raiders beat Villanova 28–21 behind seven sacks and 14 unanswered points after halftime. Saturday brings another opportunity, with Colgate and Richmond both entering 3–1 in Patriot League play. The next step is sustaining that level across four quarters. Our read: establish the run, protect possessions and make Richmond work through long drives. That gives Colgate a route into the game without depending on a late rescue.

The matchup that matters

Colgate’s ground game is the first matchup to follow. The Raiders average 160.9 rushing yards per game; Richmond allows 160.4. Those similar numbers are a starting point, not a prediction: the teams faced different opponents, and Richmond’s seven-game sample includes an FBS trip to NC State. Watch whether Colgate’s first-down runs leave second-and-medium and keep play action available. If Richmond can stop the run without extra defenders, the Raiders will have to create passing windows against a defense that forced three turnovers in its last outing.

The opponent and the opportunity

Richmond arrives at Homecoming after an October 17 bye, with a 5–2 record against Colgate’s 4–3. The Spiders managed 204 total yards in their last game at Fordham, so Colgate’s defense has a useful target: make Richmond earn first downs without gifting short fields. Last year’s meeting finished 24–19 to Richmond. The Spiders lead the series 6–1, but that five-point margin gives this rematch a clear storyline: which team converts its few decisive possessions?

Watch early

  1. Build a usable second down. Follow Colgate’s first two possessions: are runs gaining enough to keep both the pass and run available, or is Richmond creating obvious passing downs?
  2. Make pressure count without giving away space. Colgate’s seven-sack game at Villanova showed its ceiling. Against Richmond, watch whether pressure arrives while the coverage keeps quick throws from becoming easy first downs.
  3. Carry the plan through halftime. Colgate needs sustained drives after the break, not just a fast opening. Watch the first possession of the third quarter and whether the Raiders turn a scoring opportunity into seven points.
